JAKE: The Anti Literary Magazine (Gold Star Program) Gold Star Quick Links to Open Calls:General SubmissionsGeneral Submissions (Flash Categories)Interviews and Reviews General Submissions Free Tip Jar OptionOpenFICTIONJAKE is looking for short stories of a literary or experimental stripe, regardless of the genre, between 2000-7000 words. JAKE’s sweet spot is right in the middle at 3500, but as you can tell, he isn’t that picky with breaking the mold. JAKE doesn’t fuck with novellas or short story collections.NONFICTIONJAKE can appreciate a good real life story every once in a while. Send him between 2000-7000 words (but preferably around 3500), and he’ll see what he can do.FLASH FICTION/NONFICTION(See below)POETRYJAKE likes Taco Bell scraps, early 2000’s music videos, and sonnets, and he will take submissions of up to three poems totally roughly 10 pages or less. Poetry longer than that scares him, since he doesn’t actually know how to read.SOME WORDS OF WARNINGJAKE may be a rebel to the rules, but JAKE’s not an asshole either. Any work that is racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, or bigoted in any other way will be rejected outright. Any author engaging with these practices will be issued a warning about it in their rejection, with a second offense meaning JAKE’ll put you on an internal DO NOT PUBLISH list. JAKE takes this shit seriously, and will not debate the extent of the offense.JAKE especially encourages BIPOC, queer, neurodiverse and/or other marginalized writers to send in work. He is excited to engage with work that deals with the marginal, provided the theming of said work does not advocate for harm. The literary weird is a place for all kinds of weird. Send us your work reviewing a new book, a live music show, your favorite brand of novelty pancake mix, whatever!SubmitJoin the TeamTemp ClosedHey!You may have seen recently that JAKE's recently been shaking some things up editor-wise! He's looking to get a few more hands in the kitchen to start the new year, in order to support his ever-growing roster of writers and titles. In particular he's looking for some help on the Flash Fiction side, as well as help with community-building practices such as live events and social media! One of the perils (and tragedies) of independent lit is that while running a successful operation takes a tremendous amount of work, much of that work is unpaid, not only for the writers who submit, but for those who help to make the magazine a reality as well. While JAKE is still finding ways to generate revenue and begin to pay everyone from the writers to the editors to the tech wizards behind the scenes, the hope is that it becomes a paid endeavor sooner than later. This position is currently on a volunteer basis, but the goal, as always, is to help uplift everyone in the community we can.Currently, JAKE's editors include the Fiction team (EIC Ben Shahon, Prose Managing Editor Inbal Gilboa, Quentin Lucas), Nonfiction Editor AJ Maiorana, the Poetry Team (Poetry Managing Editor L.M. Cole, Heather Ann Ferrer Pulido, Laurel Reynolds, Ash Varela), Editors at Large Romy Rhoads Ewing/Elena Sichorovsky, and Community Manager Zoe Reay-Ellers. While these roles will remain unchanged, JAKE is possibly looking for:1-2 (Flash) Fiction Editor(s)A Resident/Chapbook Cover ArtistEditors for the site's primary categories (Fiction, Nonfiction, Flash Fiction/Nonfiction, Poetry) will be in charge of reading and responding to submissions, as well as scheduling with writers when their work goes live on the site. Developmental edits will be at the editor's discretion, based around how many submissions are in the queue and how invested the editor is in a particular piece. JAKE has traditionally done some developmental editing, but has also rejected pieces on that basis as well. Formatting for the site will remain a managerial editorial role with the EIC & Managing Editors. An editor may be hired for any available category or an at-large role depending on experience, availability, and the applicant pool. The Resident Artist will primarily be responsible for development of cover art for chapbooks under the JAKE house style. The Resident Artist may also on occasion be asked to create logos or graphics for JAKE projects, will have a hand in developing JAKE merch, and generally help to keep the visual style of all things JAKE fun and cohesive. Historically, JAKE has hired artists in a freelance role, but the rate can be up for negotiation for artistic contributions to the mag/press as well. Depending on which roles get filled how quickly, others may be elected to remain unfilled. As part of your application, JAKE asks you to answer a few short questions:What would make you a good editor/reader for JAKE?How would you like to see the current guidelines by which JAKE solicits work change? What are some examples of the kind of literature you'd like to see from writers submitting to you for JAKE?Have you (guest) edited with another mag before?JAKE can't wait to hear from you, and to publish the work you call for! Call will likely stay open until the team is assembled, and may close without warning. Not Open Other Related ProjectsOld Chaps
