Saint Augustine's Magazine (Gold Star Program) Gold Star

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Among Augustine’s many contributions to the world, he is the patron saint of brewers, printers, and sore eyes so send us your best. While respecting how far our University has come, the focus of Saint Augustine’s Magazine is on works of resilience. As in Saint Augustine’s Confessions, we also believe in the power of redemption so the work we accept must be grounded within the experiences of the human condition.

Simultaneous submissions are acceptable and encouraged. For fiction especially, if your work is accepted elsewhere (congratulations!), please withdraw it.

For poetry, there is no need to withdraw your submission unless multiple poems have been placed elsewhere. You always have the option to decline a contract. If you feel you must notify us, please send us a note.

Please do not submit work that has been published in print or online. This includes but is not limited to work appearing in other journals, newspapers, magazines, or publicly accessible blogs.

At this time, our publication frequency is currently unknown even to us as we are just starting out. We plan to publish issues online as well as in print and we hope to work up to a steady and a reliable publication frequency.

We anticipate a quick response time initially. Please feel free to query after 4 months by sending us a note.

When you submit your work, we take that as an indication you’re interested in Saint Augustine’s Magazine and our work, so we will add your email to our mailing list. We send a monthly newsletter, and once in a while an extra email, but we do our best not to overload in-boxes, and of course you are free to unsubscribe at any time.

If your work is accepted for publication, please refrain from submitting again for a year.

For Poetry

Each submission can contain up to three poems.

For Flash Fiction

We are open to both mimetic and speculative fiction.

Our main criterion is the excellence of the story.

Submissions should be no longer than 1,200 words.

Rights and Payment

We cannot offer cash payment at this time. This is something we would like to build up to. At this time, payment for accepted work is one copy of the magazine.

Quota: This project has established a quota. Submissions will close when it is reached.

Among Augustine’s many contributions to the world, he is the patron saint of brewers, printers, and sore eyes so send us your best. While respecting how far our University has come, the focus of Saint Augustine’s Magazine is on works of resilience. Like Saint Augustine of Hippo, we also believe in the power of redemption so the work we accept must be grounded within the true experiences of the human condition.

Simultaneous submissions are acceptable and encouraged.

For poetry, there is no need to withdraw your submission unless multiple poems have been placed elsewhere. You always have the option to decline a contract. If you feel you must notify us, please send us a note.

We prefer unpublished poems. At the same time, we are open to seeing poems other magazines missed out on. That said, we do consider poems published in individual poetry books and chapbooks.

We are coming back from a hiatus from submissions as we rebuild some of what we lost due to the COVID-19 virus. We can never replace those we lost over the last few years. At this time, we are once again planning for a fee free poetry submissions period to be open April 28, 2024 – June 1, 2024. We reserve the right to close submissions from time to time as we catch up on reading submissions. We shall likely reopen once we’ve read and responded to those in the April-June queue.

FOR POETRY

Each submission can contain up to three poems.

FOR VISUAL ART

We are open to visual art by students, alumni, staff and faculty of Saint Augustine’s University.

FICTIONAL PERSONA AS A HYBRID POETIC FORM

If you feel your piece crosses the genres or if you feel the need to write through a persona, please do let us know upfront as we have a category for hybrid work.

RIGHTS & PAYMENT

All rights stay with the author. We would like to be first on your list though we do not feel we must be the first to publish each piece. If other magazines missed out on the opportunity to publish your work prior to it appearing in your book, do send the poem or story or essay our way just so long as the work is yours.

If we are the first to publish an author’s work, all rights revert back to the author upon publication. We cannot offer cash payment at this time. This is something we would like to build up to. We are currently an online magazine with free open access. When we eventually go to print the issues, we shall send each poet and author published in Saint Augustine’s Magazine a copy. We are launching online and yes, we have plans to go to print eventually.
