Editor Interview: River Styx International Poetry Contest

Q: Describe what you publish in 25 characters or less.

A: Accessible and smart work

Q: What other current publications (or publishers) do you admire most?

A: We love a lot of journals but have to admit we are biased toward some of our fellow Missouri journals, such as Boulevard, Natural Bridge, Pleiades, etc.

Q: If you publish writing, who are your favorite writers? If you publish art, who are your favorite artists?

A: Too many to narrow down to a few...

Q: What sets your publication apart from others that publish similar material?

A: We are in our 44th year of publishing.
We publish two print issues.
We pay writers.
We still take snail mail submissions, as well as via Submittable.
Our writers are often reprinted in "best of" anthologies.

Q: What is the best advice you can give people who are considering submitting work to your publication?

A: Subscribe and read the magazine.

Q: If you publish writing, how much of a piece do you read before making the decision to reject it?

A: Yes, and yes.

Q: How important do you feel it is for publishers to embrace modern technologies?

A: Very.

Q: How much do you edit an accepted piece prior to publication?

A: We provide line editing, copy editing, and/or basic proofreading as needed. Our authors do receive proofs fro final edits before printing.

Q: Do you nominate work you've published for any national or international awards?

A: Yes, as many as we can.
