Editor Interview: counterclaim review

Q: Describe what you publish in 25 characters or less.

A: work that invigorates

Q: What other current publications (or publishers) do you admire most?

A: The Paris Review and The Offing

Q: What sets your publication apart from others that publish similar material?

A: We are open-minded editors who want to collaborate with you on publishing your work. We want to get to know you and hope your submission is the beginning of a conversation.

Q: What is the best advice you can give people who are considering submitting work to your publication?

A: Send your most surreal, most inspiring, and riskiest work. We are seeking work that stings, that lands, that shake[s] the dust (in the words of Anis Mojgani).

Q: What do submitters most often get wrong about your submissions process?

A: Following directions! Because we collaborate with submitters, we pay attention to whether they have followed the instructions on our page. We really appreciate when artists and writers are mindful of the constraints we've had to implement.

Q: How much do you want to know about the person submitting to you?

A: Cover letters don't hurt!

Q: If you publish writing, how much of a piece do you read before making the decision to reject it?

A: We read every piece to the end.

Q: What is a day in the life of an editor like for you?

A: We read every submission separately, we then read every submission together.

Q: How much do you edit an accepted piece prior to publication?

A: We don't edit anyone's work. As part of the collaboration process, we may suggest edits. Authors always approve final edits before publication.

Q: Do you nominate work you've published for any national or international awards?

A: Not yet!
