About

Since its first book appeared in 1937, the Press has published and distributed more than 3000 titles. We have more than 1400 titles currently in print, including books of general interest (biography, fiction, natural history, poetry, photography, fishing, food, travel, etc.), scholarly books (American studies, anthropology, art, classics, environmental studies, ethnic studies, film, gay & lesbian studies, history, Jewish studies, literary criticism, Slavic studies, etc.), and regional books about Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest. We publish and distribute new books each year in these fields. Among our book series are the Brittingham Prize in Poetry, the Felix Pollak Prize in Poetry, Wisconsin Studies in Autobiography, Wisconsin Studies in Classics, Living Out: Gay and Lesbian Autobiography, Studies in Dance History; George L. Mosse Series in Modern European Cultural and Intellectual History; The History of American Thought and Culture; and Publications of the Wisconsin Center for Pushkin Studies.

Fiction Temp Closed

We publish a limited number of novels and short story collections. Historically, we have focused on works with LGBTQ themes or works set in Wisconsin and the upper Midwest. We are open to considering well-written works of literary fiction that do not meet either of these criteria. However, we do not publish science fiction, fantasy, romance, young adult, and most other genre fiction.

Before Submitting

We cannot guarantee that the information on this page is correct. It is not unusual for publications to evolve or close without notice. We do our best to keep up, but it isn't always possible. Duotrope listings do not imply endorsement or recommendation of the project being listed. Before submitting, you should use your own judgment to determine whether the project meets your standards.

  • Always read the full guidelines provided by the publisher.
  • Try to read at least one previous publication to get a better idea of what the editor would like to see.
  • Unless the publisher's guidelines state otherwise, always use industry standard manuscript formatting.
  • For book publishers, it is standard to submit a cover letter, synopsis, and sample instead of the full manuscript. Do this unless otherwise instructed.
  • Be professional, patient, and persistent.
