About

Conducted since 1998, the mission of the Peninsula Pulse’s Hal Prize is to encourage and appreciate artistic expression through various literary forms and photography. The contest has showcased works from individuals of all ages and backgrounds – novice writers and photographers to professionals. Over the years, judges of differing areas of expertise choose the winning works – prose, poetry, and photography – and have included New York Times bestselling author Michael Perry, three Wisconsin Poet Laureates – Ellen Kort, Marilyn Taylor, and Bruce Dethlefsen – as well as Door County Living photographer Len Villano. The contest offers publication to a readership of more than 17,000, cash awards for first place winners, a week stay at our partnering organization, Write On, Door County, and other prizes.

Fees Notice: This project charges fees (or requires purchases) for all submissions.

Before Submitting

We cannot guarantee that the information on this page is correct. It is not unusual for publications to evolve or close without notice. We do our best to keep up, but it isn't always possible. Just remember…

  • Always read the full guidelines provided by the publisher.
  • Try to read at least one previous publication to get a better idea of what the editor would like to see.
  • Unless the publisher's guidelines state otherwise, always use industry standard manuscript formatting.
  • Be professional, patient, and persistent.
