We aim to publish the best in modern literature, from pulp to literary fiction and everything in-between. Genres are declassé, passé, and simply so last century. If it’s got a beating (or dare we say black?) heart, we want it. No more irony, no more clever cheek; just the crisp snap of authenticity slicing through sinews. So bring us your best, and we’ll do the rest. Black Heart Magazine: breaking the rules of fiction.
NONFICTION: We accept strongly opinionated reviews of new books (published within the past year) and soon-to-be-released titles of the indie, self-published and small press persuasion. In addition to more traditional book reviews, we are also seeking Character Crush pieces, which highlight the “crush-worthy” aspects of classic literary characters. A partner to our Character Crushes, we are also seeking odes to the dark side, heralding literature’s greatest villains.

Before Submitting

We cannot guarantee that the information on this page is correct. It is not unusual for publications to evolve or close without notice. We do our best to keep up, but it isn't always possible. Just remember…

  • Always read the full guidelines provided by the publisher.
  • Try to read at least one previous publication to get a better idea of what the editor would like to see.
  • Unless the publisher's guidelines state otherwise, always use industry standard manuscript formatting.
  • For novel/collection publishers, it is standard to submit a cover letter, synopsis, and sample instead of the full manuscript. Do this unless otherwise instructed.
  • Include a SASE with all mailed submissions, queries, and requests for guidelines, unless the editor replies via or email or guidelines state otherwise.
  • Be professional, patient and persistent.
