About

The people of Mid-American Review seek to publish works of fine literary art from a diverse body of artists. We are on the lookout for work that has the power to move and astonish us while displaying the highest level of craft. We dedicate ourselves to encouraging, nurturing, teaching, and learning from the writers we meet through careful consideration of their work and meaningful dialogue. The writers in each issue shall include both well established poets and authors and brand new voices. Because the acts of writing and reading force people to slow down and examine the world and their part in it, MAR is in a position to foster peace and understanding and to make a positive difference, and we fully embrace the challenge of making the world a better place through literature. We are dedicated to finding new audiences for contemporary writing and to building the audience for our journal, while also providing an outlet for professional development and personal growth among staff members.

Fiction Open

Mid-American Review considers work that is character and/or language-oriented without sacrificing narrative. We are open to submissons from new and established authors, both traditional and experimental work, including short-shorts, but discourage genre fiction. Humor is a plus, but basically, we are looking to read a story we haven't read before, or a familiar story presented in an original way.

Nonfiction Open

Intensive examination and getting below the surface of the subject is of primary consideration in MAR's essays. Essays need to be more than anecdotes or stories and for this reason, we rarely publish strict memoir because the narrative rarely goes beyond the author's own experience to engage the larger world. We also look for a command of language. We do not, traditionally, publish scholarly essays, but personal examinations of scholarly and critical topics are welcome.

Poetry Open

Poems should emanate from textured, evocative images, use language with an awareness of how words sound and mean, and have a definite sense of voice. Each line should help carry the poem, and an individual vision must be evident. We encourage new as well as established writers.
