About

Science Fiction Trails is an annual print magazine featuring stories with science fiction content that are set in the Wild West era. Stories must take place during the time period 1850-1900 AD. All stories should have a strong connection to the western region of the United States. We very much appreciate historical accuracy. Don’t have states that weren’t states back then or people using the Pony Express in areas the PE did not serve, unless you provide a reason for it to be otherwise. This is a science fiction magazine. Stories need to have some type of science fiction content. What’s SF to modern man is SF in the Wild West. Another way of looking at it, people back then did not have the scientific knowledge we do today. That doesn’t mean they were stupid, they simply had never been exposed to technology. The difference isn’t in the science or technology, but in the way people respond to it. For instance, computers would be almost impossible for somebody in 1880 to comprehend. On the other hand, magazine articles of the day indicate a large chunk of the populous believed in life on other planets and, especially, life on Mars–far more than do people today.

Before Submitting

We cannot guarantee that the information on this page is correct. It is not unusual for publications to evolve or close without notice. We do our best to keep up, but it isn't always possible. Just remember…

  • Always read the full guidelines provided by the publisher.
  • Try to read at least one previous publication to get a better idea of what the editor would like to see.
  • Unless the publisher's guidelines state otherwise, always use industry standard manuscript formatting.
  • For novel/collection publishers, it is standard to submit a cover letter, synopsis, and sample instead of the full manuscript. Do this unless otherwise instructed.
  • Include a SASE with all mailed submissions, queries, and requests for guidelines, unless the editor replies via or email or guidelines state otherwise.
  • Be professional, patient and persistent.
