About
Dark Highlands: Fairy Tales, Fables, and Folklore is a professional, semi-annual collection of artwork, poetry, and short fiction that focuses on darker works in the fairytale fantasy, fable or folk tale genres, while maintaining a PG-13 rating (Dark Highlands Anthology, our bi-annual publication of horror and dark fantasy, is geared for a more mature audience). Dark Highlands describes fairytale fantasy as any work that features fantastic creatures (fairies, elves, trolls, giants, talking animals, etc.) or the presence of magic, and takes place in either a modern or fabled setting. Fables are short tales that teach a moral lesson, most likely with animals or inanimate objects as characters. Folk tales are considered to be based on oral tradition, and feature situations relating to everyday scenarios, often including a lower class getting the upper hand on a higher class.
