About

550 members set this magazine as a Favorite.

Founded in 2007 by graduate students in the Creative Writing Program at the University of Tennessee, Grist is a nationally distributed journal of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, interviews, and craft essays. Published annually every spring, each issue is accompanied by Grist Online, which features some of the best work we’ve received during our reading period. In addition to general submissions, Grist holds the Pro Forma Contest [listed separately] every spring, recognizing unpublished creative work that explores the relationship between content and form, whether in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or a hybrid genre. Throughout the year, we publish interviews, craft essays, and reviews on our blog, The Writing Life. We seek work of high literary quality from both emerging and established writers. We welcome all styles and aesthetic approaches. All that matters to us is quality.

Fees Notice: This project charges fees (or requires purchases) for all submissions, except for their subscribers. The fee is USD $4.

Before Submitting

We cannot guarantee that the information on this page is correct. It is not unusual for publications to evolve or close without notice. We do our best to keep up, but it isn't always possible. Duotrope listings do not imply endorsement or recommendation of the project being listed. Before submitting, you should use your own judgment to determine whether the project meets your standards.

  • Always read the full guidelines provided by the publisher.
  • Try to read at least one previous publication to get a better idea of what the editor would like to see.
  • Unless the publisher's guidelines state otherwise, always use industry standard manuscript formatting.
  • Be professional, patient, and persistent.
