Editor Interview: The Mindful Word: Journal of Engaged Living

Q: Describe what you publish in 25 characters or less.

A: Engaged living articles

Q: What other current publications (or publishers) do you admire most?

A: Sun Magazine
Yoga Journal
Kindred Spirit
Spirit & Health
Light of Consciousness
Shambhala Sun
The Intelligent Optimist
Briarpatch
The Dominion
National Geographic

Q: What sets your publication apart from others that publish similar material?

A: We publish a digital magazine rather than just blog articles.

Q: What is the best advice you can give people who are considering submitting work to your publication?

A: Read through some articles on the site. Try to approach your story from an interesting angle and take all different sides of the story into account.

Q: Describe the ideal submission.

A: An narrative non-fiction piece that immerses the reader in a world that you've thoroughly researched. The writing flows smoothly and keeps the reader engaged.

Q: What do submitters most often get wrong about your submissions process?

A: Even though it says we do not accept guest posts, we still get guest post requests!

Q: How much do you want to know about the person submitting to you?

A: If it's a first-time submitter it would be helpful to know where you're published before, but not necessary. The final work is what matters most.

Q: If you publish writing, how much of a piece do you read before making the decision to reject it?

A: Sometimes I can tell within the first paragraph, sometimes I need to read the whole thing through to make a decision.

Q: What additional evaluations, if any, does a piece go through before it is accepted?

A: Each article gets evaluated by one editor, occasionally two if we need to think a piece over some more.

Q: How important do you feel it is for publishers to embrace modern technologies?

A: It's not just important, but essential. The days of print are numbered. Digital is taking over quickly and will soon be the only option so we have to expand the variety of digital publishing options available so as to not bore the reader with the same old blog format.
