Coven of the East AnthologyTemp Closed

We are thrilled to announce an open call for submissions to Coven of the East: Reclaiming Asian Women’s Magical Histories [Working Title], an anthology celebrating the magic, myths, and untold stories of Asian women across history and the diaspora. The anthology, co-edited by Angela Yuriko Smith and Pauline Chow, will be published in September 2025.

What We’re Looking For:

We seek fiction and nonfiction pieces that explore the intersection of magic, identity, and history. Whether through storytelling, personal essay, or cultural exploration, we are interested in works that redefine and reclaim the elements of magick rooted in Asian traditions and experiences.

We want narratives that honor the wild women, healers, and dissenters who have shaped the cultural landscapes of Asia and its diaspora. Let your stories call to the spirits of the past while grounding them in the realities of the present.

Payment and Submission Details:
  • Pay Rate: $0.08 per word (pro-rated) for pieces up to 1,200 words.
  • Bonus: A Kickstarter campaign may provide an additional flat rate for contributors.
  • Submission Period: Opens January 29, 2025 (Lunar New Year) until February 21.
  • Deadline: Details to follow upon the official launch.
  • Expected Publication Date: September 2025.
Why This Anthology Matters:

Angela Yuriko Smith shares:
"Magic isn’t just in myths—it’s all around us, from the networks of nature to the mechanisms of man. By seeing it for what it is, we reclaim our power and reshape the world in our own image. Magic and wisdom are our birthrights, and this anthology seeks to protect and celebrate that heritage for generations to come."

Pauline Chow adds:
"As an Asian American, I’ve sought to reconnect with our feminine roots. Women of the Shang Dynasty were shamans and priestesses, yet so much of our history remains obscured. This anthology aims to unearth and amplify narratives of wild women, magic, and dissent across Asia and its diaspora. Let’s bring their stories to light."

Invited and Accepted Contributors:

We are proud to include a diverse range of voices, including established and emerging writers, who will help redefine the narratives of magick and history.

Let your words conjure a future rooted in the wisdom of the past. Join us in weaving this magical tapestry.
