Pleiades: Literature in Context

Pleiades is particularly interested in creative nonfiction that looks both inward and outward, that makes the reader both think and feel at the same time. All forms of creative nonfiction, including personal essay and memoir, are welcome, but we are particularly interested in nonfiction that balances introspection and the personal with writing through or about something larger than ourselves. Straight reportage, literary analysis, or academic writing such as articles, research papers, or scholarly-oriented works don’t fit our aesthetic on their own, and we wish you the best of luck placing those works elsewhere. If a piece balances any of these approaches with creative nonfiction techniques and craft, then feel free to send that work our way.

Please limit your submissions to 6,000 words in length; however, longer works may be considered if space permits. Single pieces over 8,000 words will really need to capture our attention and make us excited about the writing. For flash packets, please submit up to three pieces at a time. Flash pieces should be 1,000 words or less and all be within the same file, with each new piece starting on a new page.

Pleiades is looking for exceptional fiction, with a focus on well-developed characters, memorable language, and immersive settings, as well as provocatively wrought subject matter conveyed via a distinct voice. While there are no length requirements, our journal has limited space, and manuscripts over 12,000 words will especially need to impress.

Please submit 3-5 poems via .doc or .docx file format. Work of any length will be considered, and we look forward to reading your most polished poems. We are particularly interested in work that embraces risk and is lyrically inventive. We value work that gives voice to a range of lived experiences and demonstrates dexterity of craft.

Pleiades publishes original translations into English of contemporary and historical fiction, nonfiction (including stand alone excerpts), and poetry. Before submitting, translator(s) must have secured the rights to publish the work in both the English and the original language and confirm such in their cover letter.
Submissions should include translations and originals, brief bios of authors and translator(s), and contextualizing information on the original publication. If your work is accepted, you may be asked to write a translator's note to accompany the work. Please submit 3-5 poems or up to 5 pages of prose.
