Word Poppy Press

Word Poppy Press focuses on the personal essay, though op-eds, short stories, book reviews, and poetry will also be accepted for publication. Our only criteria is that your work is previously unpublished and you are a resident of Northern California.

Issue Two Free

We are thrilled to announce that submissions are open for Sequoia Speaks: Issue Two! We will consider poetry, personal essays, flash fiction, short stories, book reviews, and all other short-form pieces. Pieces should be no shorter than 250 words and no longer than 5,000 (exceptions made for micro-poetry).

Visual artists and photographers are also welcome to submit work. As this is our first-ever Winter Issue, we're looking for pieces with a wintry theme: think snow and ice, but also pale blues, whites, and blacks, harsh, arctic imagery, crackling fires, et cetera.

Contributors are mailed a free copy of the journal their work appears in. Once you've submitted your work, our editor will respond within 72 hours. We look forward to hearing from you.

Word Poppy Blog Free

Word Poppy Press is looking for emerging Northern California authors interested in being featured on our blog.

The Word Poppy blog posts twice a month: once with a piece from our editor-in-chief, and once featuring a local writer. Send us a personal essay, ranging from 1,000-1,500 words, and tell us the best story you've got. It could be humor, it could be a story about death and loss, it could be about that one time you swear you saw Bigfoot in Muir Woods. Whatever it is, make sure it's something you're passionate about--readers can tell when the content of your piece truly moves you, and when it's as tedious as a trip to the DMV. Our guidelines are simple: you must be a resident of Northern California, and your piece must be previously unpublished.

Everyone has a story to tell. We want to hear yours.
