The Speaking Shape: A Visual Poetry Anthology Free Tip Jar Option

The Speaking Shape
A Visual Poetry Anthology

FlowerSong Press invites submissions for a full-color anthology of visual poetry from BIPOC writers.

Visual poetry—poetry that is primarily expressed through line, shape, and color, and sometimes represented by poetry comics and erasures—has seen a recent surge in popularity driven by the need to escape the traditional constraints of line-based text, reflecting a willingness to explore new modes of poetic expression, and continuing a tradition of protest through image. However, the medium is not often representative of the concerns, needs, and foci of BIPOC writers. This anthology will focus attention on the work of BIPOC writers and allow space for their own voices.

Please submit up to five (5) pieces of visual poetry which can consist of or include the following:
• Photographs
• Erasures
• Video stills and other moving images that can be represented on the page
• Collage
• Comics
• Paintings
• “Info”graphics
• Charts/graphs
• Creative illustration
• Other exercises in visual poetry.

Please send high-quality submissions of at least 300 dpi to [email protected] with the Subject Line: Speaking Shape. If pieces are too large to attach, include a link in the body of the email to a drive where they can be downloaded. Also include titles of each piece and a short bio. The expected size of the printed page will be 7” by 9”. We invite experimentation, risk-taking, the ineffable, and the strange. If you aren’t sure if something fits, please send it to us.

Accepted submissions will be published in full color by FlowerSong Press, a BIPOC-centered publisher of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and childrens’ books:

Each contributor will receive two printed copies of the anthology. Distribution via Ingram, online sellers, and the FlowerSong Press website. FlowerSong retains first serial rights. Contributors retain all rights after publication.
