For full transparency and your planning purposes, please note that at this time we do not publish reviews and interviews in issues of the Broad Ripple Review. Instead, we publish them to Afterwords: The BRR Blog. Accepted work will be able to use Afterwords: The BRR Blog or Afterwords as their publication credit.

We hope this gives reviewers and interviewers additional flexibility in terms of timing your submission as our blog is not tied to a strict publication schedule like our quarterly issues. That being said, we do need some time to review and prepare work for publication, so submitting in advance of the publication date of the book, or event an interview is tied to, is generally ideal.

In addition to our general submission guidelines at the top of this page, the following additional guidelines apply:

Critical Book Review Guidelines

We welcome insightful reviews of books in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. We prefer forthcoming titles, but will consider recently published works that invite critical engagement. Reviews should move beyond summary—attentive to language, form, and the ideas a book brings into conversation.

• No firm word count, but most reviews run 800–1,200 words
• Include title, author, publisher, publication date, ISBN, and page count
• Simultaneous submissions are welcome.
• No reviews of friends work and please disclose any potential conflicts of interest
• Double space your work and use a readable (e.g., Times New Roman) 12 point font
• We have a special interest in highlighting marginalized voices, but we do not have publication house requirements - meaning both big five and indie publishers are acceptable.

Interview Guidelines

We publish interviews that illuminate the creative process and engage writers whose work expands the conversation. If an interview is tied to a book launch or event, we aim to publish it as close to that date as possible.

• We accept both pitches and completed interviews
  • For pitches: include the interviewee’s name, a short description of their work or forthcoming project, and the focus or angle of the proposed conversation. DO NOT use Duosuma for pitches (see below).
  • For completed interviews: include a brief introduction, bios for interviewer and interviewee, and the final edited text. Only completed interviews should be submitted in Duosuma.
• No firm word count, though most run 1,500 to 3,000 words
• Double space your work and use a readable (e.g., Times New Roman) 12 point font
• Simultaneous submissions are welcome, but please disclose any conflicts of interest
• Acceptance of a pitch does not guarantee publication

FOR INTERVIEWS: Please do not submit pitches within Duosuma. Please email our Reviews/Interviews Editor, Maggie Russell ([email protected]), directly with your pitch. You will work with Maggie directly regarding the interview and will only submit it for processing in Duosuma once it is complete and everyone is satisfied with the final product. If you have an already completed interview to submit, please do not email and submit within Duosuma.
