What is Midwest Weird?

We're an audio literary magazine featuring weird fiction and nonfiction by Midwestern writers. Listen to the latest episodes in your favorite podcast player, or at MidwestWeird.com. And submit your stories, essays, or other short work here.

What is Midwest Weird Serial Stories?

We’re expanding Midwest Weird into book-length work, serialized over multiple episodes.

How will this work?

In Serial Stories, we will publish story collections, essay collections, novels, novellas, or other book-length works as serialized audio episodes.

For example, a story collection of 10 stories could be published as a season of 10 episodes. A novel could be broken into 8-14 episodes. And so on.

Each individual episode will feature you (or a member of our team) reading the story/chapter/essay, with accompanying sound design and production value similar to Midwest Weird episodes.

Why would I publish a book this way?

Publishing is tough. Getting to the big publishers requires the representation of an agent. Getting the attention of small publishers can require extensive time. Self-published work can get drowned out by the sheer volume of other works. And with any of these options, earnings can be restricted or missing altogether.

Serial Stories fills a gap in the publishing world. With a unique offering of audio-first publication, multiple payment options, and the majority of earnings delivered direct to you, this is a way for your work to shine.

What are we looking for?

We’re looking for weird book-length work from writers based in the Midwest. We’re especially looking for work from writers who are women or nonbinary, part of the LGBTQ, BIPOC, and disabled communities, and/or other underrepresented writers.

What do I submit?

Send us a summary of your book, along with a sample. The summary can be a few sentences to a few paragraphs. The sample can be a story or essay from the collection, a chapter from the novel or novella, etc.

Include a short bio, including your membership in any underrepresented groups. Have any audio or podcast experience? Let us know!

Long story short

If you think we might like your work, send it our way. And stay weird.
