Bougainvillea Poetry Prize 0

A project of FlowerSong Press (see other related projects).

About

The focus is on work that grapples with issues concerning the poor, workers, the underclass, financial insecurity, working conditions, inequity, precarity, and related concerns. We are interested in promoting work that illuminates, narrates, or champions the lives of working class people as they make their way through the world. We especially encourage working class poets, and those who grew up in working class families, to submit. We invite all forms of poetry, whether in traditional forms or more experimental. BIPOC and LGBTQ+ poets are especially encouraged to submit. The prize honors the memory of Irma (1939-2010) and Alfonso Gomez (1938-2021) of Brownsville, Texas—Mexican-Americans who raised seven children while working in such jobs as cashier, ice worker, homemaker, truck driver, migrant farmworker, painter, and custodian, among many others.

Fees Notice: This project charges fees (or requires purchases) for all submissions.

Duotrope listings do not imply endorsement or recommendation of the project being listed. Before submitting, you should use your own judgment to determine whether the project meets your standards.

  • Always read the full guidelines provided by the publisher.
  • Try to read at least one previous publication to get a better idea of what the editor would like to see.
  • Unless the publisher's guidelines state otherwise, always use industry standard manuscript formatting.
  • Be professional, patient, and persistent.
