Since January 2000, Beltway Poetry Quarterly has published poetry by authors who live or work in the capital of the United States and surrounding states. Co-editors edit three issues per year, and the fourth issue is usually guest edited by another area writer (who has previously been featured in an issue). Many issues feature portfolios (four to eight poems) by between five and nine authors. Other issues focus on the literary history of the Greater DC region. One issue per year has a theme (such as poems on museums, poems set in DC, sonnets, prose poems). For themed issues, we announce a reading period and theme and open submissions to authors who live or work in DC, MD, VA, WV, or DE. Since the theme and reading period change each year, we recommend area poets subscribe (submissions are free) or check our web site regularly for more information. We strive to showcase the richness and diversity of Washington area authors in every issue, with poets from different backgrounds, races, ethnicities, ages, and sexual orientations represented. We have included Pulitzer Prize winners and those who have never previously published. We publish academic, spoken word, and experimental authors--and also those poets whose work defies categorization.
Important: They only accept unsolicited submissions for special, themed issues, once a year.
Limited Demographic: Submissions are restricted to people who who live or work in DC, VA, MD, WV, or DE.
