Everything in Aspic 5

About

More and more it is becoming plain that our current moment is neither crystalline nor amber, neither immutable nor impenetrable. The table shakes, the world tilts, and the medium that suspends all of us wobbles threateningly. Maybe it is already liquefying and pooling in the plate. Maybe one day we will all sink to the bottom. Today is something cast in a jello mold, slapping wetly against yesterday and tomorrow. Tomorrow is a key-lime monstrosity we are unprepared to face. But the permeability of the gelatin is a reminder of what was and what may be again. Let's not treat the now as an amber that we can't transgress. Let's learn from the shaking cast of where we’ve been so that we can better avoid the terrors that lie before us. Let's not mythologize nostalgia and forget that, once upon a time, we made hot dog pies and mayonnaise salad and aspic aquariums. If nothing else, we should leave these words suspended in gelatin and find something else to eat. Bon appetit.
