Peninsula Arts Magazine 3

About

Peninsula Arts Magazine is a 501(c)3 nonprofit publishing works of poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction as well as a wide range of visual arts related to themes of Michigan’s natural world and an exploration of our personal ties to this environment. Accepted pieces are published in a quarterly print issue and concurrently in the online journal. Peninsula Arts publishes on a seasonal basis and all reading and review is done with an eye towards the upcoming issue. “Michigan,” like many North American place-names, is an adapted word taken from an indigenous (Ojibwe) language. Peninsula Arts hopes to celebrate the relationship that humans have had with this land and water for millennia, and to facilitate conversations about how we as a statewide community can better show respect and care for each other and our environment. This begins with acknowledging the claims that the Sioux, Menominee, Anishinaabe (Odawa, Ojibwe, and Potawatomi), Wyandot, Mississauga, Sauk, Peoria, Fox, Myaamia, and Kaskaskia people have to this territory. The environment of Michigan is in danger as a warmer world promises substantial changes to our beloved biospheres and hydrosphere over the next few decades. This publication affirms the sacred connection with nature experienced across our two peninsulas and explored by our contributors, and seeks to communicate the value of what is at stake. We imagine a future where our communities have the tools and power they need to defend a livable and beautiful outdoor world for ourselves and for Earth’s cohabitants for many generations to come.
