exploring family dynamics and trans allyship

Nonfiction

Janet Marstine (she/her) is an emerging creative nonfiction writer who examines the complexity of family dynamics, including her relationship with her late transgender brother, Clay. Her memoir-in-progress, The Trans-Adjacent Sister, explores how her brother’s identity shaped the person Janet is today. Janet’s stories have been published in the Ginosko Literary Journal, Gordon Square Review and JMWW.

A retired Associate Professor of Museum Studies at the University of Leicester (UK), Janet has published six books on museum ethics. Janet was awarded grants from the Institute for Museum and Library Services (US), the Arts and Humanities Research Council (UK), and the British Academy. In 2018, she was a Senior Research Fellow at Fudan University in Shanghai.

Janet lives in Maine, one of her two favorite places, and, each winter, spends a month at the other, Jodhpur, India, where she leads trauma-informed journaling workshops with LGBTQIA+ young adults.
