Kierson Weber Non-Member New Poetry for the tender and hauntedKierson Weber began writing poetry around the age of twelve, when she discovered that putting words on paper gave big feelings and complicated thoughts somewhere to go. She remembers being told she was bright and well-spoken. She also remembers losing a spelling bee because she couldn’t spell “babushka”—a word she still double-checks today.Though she has professional and academic achievements she could list, Kierson is proudest of being a helper. She often returns to the wisdom Fred Rogers shared from his mother: “Look for the helpers.” She strives to be one of them—when no one is looking, when she isn’t sure there are other helpers around, and even when she’s scared. Her writing holds tightly to the thin, invisible string connecting us all: our need to be helped, our capacity to help one another, and the complicated humanity that exists in between.
