Cat-lovin' illustrator who makes things by hand.

Visual Art

Depicting the imagined goings-on of the animal world, Lea Zalinskis creates color-saturated illustrations entirely from hand-cut paper, and tiny drawings in ink and pencil. She makes work on commission, designs prints and cards, and makes labels for neat companies like Rhetoric Coffee. Her Night Heron design appears on Oakland Public Library membership cards and can be kept right in your pocket.

Lea graduated from California College of the Arts with a BFA in Photography before returning to her first love of illustration. She loves animals, bugs, good coffee, and laughing until she cries. In the studio she can often be found amidst a large pile of multicolored scraps, tweezers in hand, gluing pieces of paper to other paper. Sometimes she finds paper in her shoes. She lives in California.

Interview with Lea Zalinskis

Who are your literary (or artistic) heroes?

Tove Jansson, Anita Paegle, William Steig

Where do you find inspiration?

Watching bugs live their lives indoors and outdoors, the animal world in general, Latvian mythology/motifs, Art Deco, vintage ads/posters.

For your first draft (or sketch), do you prefer analog or digital tools, or a mix?

Analog, always!

Do you incorporate generative AI/LLMs into your creative process? If so, how?

Nope! My brain is a constant idea-generator.

What is your favorite word and why?

Parcel. It feels nice to say, and evokes images of a satisfyingly neat package being delivered, received, or carried around by a sweet little guy.
