He holds a PhD in English from Vanderbilt University and an MA in Folklore. His fiction explores the uneasy boundaries between domestic life, regional history, folklore, faith, and the natural world. He is currently completing Birnam Wood, a collection of interlocking stories set in and around a Nashville-area subdivision built over an older, half-buried landscape. He also records original music. His albums include Picture Book (2006), Postsouthern (2025) and Live Learn Die Forget (2026). He recorded with Tommy Spurlock, Garth Hudson (of The Band), Sneaky Pete Kleinow (Flying Burrito Brothers).
