Interview with Ronald R Strickland

Where do you prefer to do your creative work?

Starbucks...but it's got to be a particular Starbucks with the right vibe. Otherwise I can't work there.

Do you read literary journals and magazines regularly? If so, which are your favorites?

Yes I do. Hushmarrow Press is the one I work for and it's the one I read the most.

Who are your literary (or artistic) heroes?

Walter Mosley, August Wilson, Chester Himes, Langston Hughes, R.R.Strickland (yours truly)

If you could only take one book on a ten-year voyage, what book would you choose?

The Holy Bible, KJV.

How much of a typical day (or week) are you able to dedicate to your creative work?

18 hours EACH DAY Mon-Fri

17 hours EACH DAY Sat-Sun

What makes you procrastinate when you could be doing your creative work? What are your strategies for finding focus?

Not wanting to edit. Listening to Binaural music.

How do you celebrate your successes, such as acceptances? How do you handle rejections and other setbacks?

I post online like most people. I rejoice unto myself.

Rejections I don't handle as well. I tend to write out of anger and rejection and come up with a better character than I had at first, for whatever little contest I lost.

How much time do you spend reading for pleasure or edification?

Maybe an hour a day.

Do you have a personal creative style? How would you describe it?

Unique.

Where do you find inspiration?

Through authors I admire.

What single creative achievement are you most proud of?

I don't have any kids.

What fictional character would you most like to be?

Spider-Man

If you could choose to be born in any era, which one would you choose and why?

The one I was born in. Because growing up in the 80's and 90's was awesome!

What advice would you give to a young, budding writer (or artist) with less experience than yourself?

Write all the time. Every day. All day. Until you get tired. Then write some more.

For your first draft (or sketch), do you prefer analog or digital tools, or a mix?

Digital.

Do you incorporate generative AI/LLMs into your creative process? If so, how?

No.

What is your favorite word and why?

I don't have one...oddly.

What would you like your epitaph to say?

From homeless to the name on everyone's lips.

Are you an unreliable narrator?

No.
