Before I started school, I went to kindergarten. They called us by our first names there and taught us to read, write, and count. I remember those days only vaguely.

In first grade, we went over everything we had already learned in kindergarten. We learned to write and count all over again, except now we were called by our last names, and there was no afternoon nap. I already knew all of it. At first, I got little stars on my notebooks, and later I started getting top grades in my school diary.

In the middle of May, while playing soccer in the schoolyard, I kicked the manhole cover instead of the ball. The ball had rolled into a pothole next to it. Walking around with my leg in a cast was no fun, so I started reading. I read everything I could find on the bookshelves at home and at our country house.

Looking back on my school years, I can only repeat the words of a great Russian writer: “I owe everything good in myself to books.”
