She has finished a memoir about life in a Catholic cult and is working on a linked short story collection set in small-town Nebraska in various time periods from the 1920s to the early 2000s. An English teacher turned technical writer at a national laboratory. She then became an indie bookseller, most recently at Powell's Books. She holds a PhD in English from the University of Illinois. She has lived in nine states and moved to Portland, Oregon, in 1997, with her husband. She plans to stay there for the rest of her life.
