American roots. Hungarian life. Literary fiction.

Fiction

John Barefield is an American writer, translator, and English-language educator who has lived in Budapest for more than thirty years. He is the co-author of four bilingual English–Hungarian EFL textbooks and has taught thousands of students across Hungary. His fiction blends surrealism, dark humor, and emotional depth, often exploring identity, time, and the slipperiness of reality. When he isn’t writing, he divides his time between the city and a small Hungarian farmhouse, where he grows ideas at roughly the same rate as tomatoes. My Other Budapest is his debut novel.
