Interview with Dennis Humphrey

Where do you prefer to do your creative work?

Wherever I am. I haven't figured out how to write where I am not, but I am working on it.

If you could only take one book on a ten-year voyage, what book would you choose?

The one I am writing at the time. That should give me just about enough time.

What makes you procrastinate when you could be doing your creative work? What are your strategies for finding focus?

Doing my day job. It's a bad habit, and one I'm trying to break.

What single creative achievement are you most proud of?

My kids, though they were co-authored.

What fictional character would you most like to be?

Dennis Humphrey, award-winning author, master of the query process, and successful serial square peg.

What advice would you give to a young, budding writer (or artist) with less experience than yourself?

Bless your heart

For your first draft (or sketch), do you prefer analog or digital tools, or a mix?

Whatever I have at hand: Pages, No.2 pencil and my journal, a burnt stick and the back of a rejection letter...

Do you incorporate generative AI/LLMs into your creative process? If so, how?

No, never for creative processes. I do consult it as a souped-up search engine, and I have been known to consult it for legal, financial, and relationship advice, but never for something as important as creative writing.

What is your favorite word and why?

Yes. What the heck is yours?

What would you like your epitaph to say?

Well, that didn't go as planned

Are you an unreliable narrator?

Sure, I mean, I guess. Aren't we all? Why? What have you heard?
