scientist, educator, writer

Fiction Nonfiction

I'm a physicist and historian by training, and a biomedical scientist by profession, with a career that has spanned scientific research, public policy, higher education, and institutional leadership. In addition to authoring or co-editing eleven books, my students, collaborators and I have published more than 300 research articles in leading scientific journals. My laboratory has used and developed LLMs and I have recently developed a patent protected governance platform and architecture that addresses traceability and transparency of AI decisions in high stakes domains such as global security, finance, and healthcare. In recognition of my role in launching the Human Genome Project, I was awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal by President Bill Clinton Until my retirement in 2024, I was Metcalf Professor of Science and Engineering at Boston University, and prior to that served 10 years as Dean of the College of Engineering.
