Interview with D. L. Lang

Where do you prefer to do your creative work?

Alone in a quiet place either at home or in nature.

Who are your literary (or artistic) heroes?

Woody Guthrie, John Reed, The Beatles

How much of a typical day (or week) are you able to dedicate to your creative work?

Far less than I would like.

What makes you procrastinate when you could be doing your creative work? What are your strategies for finding focus?

Other priorities in life such as my health tends to be my focus. When I do feel creative, I am grateful for those moments of inspiration.

How do you celebrate your successes, such as acceptances? How do you handle rejections and other setbacks?

I feel joy when I am published. Rejection sucks, but it is an inherent part of being a writer. It only means the piece needs to be sent elsewhere.

Where do you find inspiration?

Researching, reading the news, hiking, and listening to music.

What single creative achievement are you most proud of?

Being a Woody Guthrie Poet.

What fictional character would you most like to be?

Snoopy

If you could choose to be born in any era, which one would you choose and why?

The 1960s because of the music and social movements.

What advice would you give to a young, budding writer (or artist) with less experience than yourself?

Practice. The more you write, the better you get. Take breaks, but don’t give up. Read a lot and try to have diverse life experiences. Surround yourself with creative people. You are a writer if you write. Accolades come second to satisfying your desire to create.

Do you incorporate generative AI/LLMs into your creative process? If so, how?

No. I use my brain.
