Poet & biostatistician. Survival analysis, elegy.

Poetry

Kent Koprowicz is a poet and biostatistician based in Seattle. Much of his work uses the language of clinical trials and survival analysis — hazard models, censored observations, imputation — as load-bearing structure for elegy, love, and Pacific Northwest landscape. His work has appeared in Thin Skin and Pfeilstorch Fiction, and is forthcoming in brief + incorrect, Bloodroot Poetry Journal, Double Dutch Magazine, and Twisted Tongue Press. He studies at Hugo House and is at work on a first collection, The Model Had Been Misspecified.

Interview with Kent Koprowicz

Where do you prefer to do your creative work?

In my orange chair at the bungalow. Or at Café Vita, Ladro, Victrola…

Do you read literary journals and magazines regularly? If so, which are your favorites?

Yes. All of them.

Who are your literary (or artistic) heroes?

Kafka.

If you could only take one book on a ten-year voyage, what book would you choose?

A good dictionary.

How much of a typical day (or week) are you able to dedicate to your creative work?

Hours. (Hours.)

What makes you procrastinate when you could be doing your creative work? What are your strategies for finding focus?

An untidy life. Write.

How do you celebrate your successes, such as acceptances? How do you handle rejections and other setbacks?

Acceptances: I smile. I log. I post.

Rejections: I frown. I log.

Do you have a personal creative style? How would you describe it?

Biostat Noir.

Where do you find inspiration?

Everywhere.

What single creative achievement are you most proud of?

Putting myself out there, being rejected, putting myself out there. Rinse. Repeat.

What advice would you give to a young, budding writer (or artist) with less experience than yourself?

Figure out how to have money and enjoy life too.

For your first draft (or sketch), do you prefer analog or digital tools, or a mix?

Yes.

What is your favorite word and why?

Heteroskedasticity. Just look at it!

Are you an unreliable narrator?

Absolutely.
