Interview with Kim Barsamian

Where do you prefer to do your creative work?

I have a cluttered desk and a comfy chair in a room with a big window. It is quiet, and I can hear my thoughts there.

Do you read literary journals and magazines regularly? If so, which are your favorites?

I read so many--not thoroughly, but I love reading all kinds of writing. At the moment, I am reading Fish Girl Collective. I

How much of a typical day (or week) are you able to dedicate to your creative work?

I spend about 10-15 hours a week, maybe more.

What makes you procrastinate when you could be doing your creative work? What are your strategies for finding focus?

Almost anything can distract me. Just now I heard a car beep and I had to look. I give myself deadlines, and I generally stick to them.

How do you celebrate your successes, such as acceptances? How do you handle rejections and other setbacks?

I get many rejections, and I try not to worry about them. In my mind, receiving rejections makes acceptances feel so much sweeter. I participate in a poetry open mic called Words on Fire, and they announce acceptances to the audience. It is such a nice way to celebrate!

How much time do you spend reading for pleasure or edification?

I enjoy reading and try to read at least an hour or two every day.

Do you have a personal creative style? How would you describe it?

My poems and stories tend to be sparse but impactful.

What single creative achievement are you most proud of?

I stopped writing poetry for many years. I am not even sure why. I began to write again about a year ago and had little faith in my writing until my first poem was published. I was so proud to accomplish this buried dream.

If you could choose to be born in any era, which one would you choose and why?

My formative years were in the 60s and 70s. I had so much freedom and many adventures, which gave me a lot of inspiration for writing now. I would choose it all over again.

What advice would you give to a young, budding writer (or artist) with less experience than yourself?

Just write whenever you can. Try to write every day. Read all sorts of things. Observe everything. Don't be afraid to put your work out there.

For your first draft (or sketch), do you prefer analog or digital tools, or a mix?

I like digital. It keeps up with my thoughts better than my slow writing. When I write with a pen, I am less likely to revise it.

What is your favorite word and why?

My favorite word is the name of a town in New York: Schenectady. It is fun to say. I do love a lot of words in my poems when I'm writing them. I move on to the next words when the poem is done.
