Stephen grew up in an industrial community in Baltimore, played lacrosse and football at the U of MD, and graduated with a science degree. He earned two master’s degrees and a PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology, then conducted research in Geneva, Stockholm, and Luxembourg. There, he fell in love with beer and opened the first European Beer-of-the-Month Club. He then began brewing Raven Special Lager in Germany, named after Poe's poem The Raven. In 1998, The Raven was first brewed in Baltimore, along with seven other Poe-story-named beers. After a myriad of articles on science and beer, Stephen is now dedicated to literary works. With his diverse background and a desire to know the facts, he writes both fiction and nonfiction, all with scientific and historical accuracy. He has written a scientifically accurate novel about climate change, his biography, two short-story collections, and a historical memoir about a Portuguese nurse in Shanghai, China, during World War II.
