Poetry Nonfiction

Mark Irvan Choate trained at Yale and has published books and many articles on contemporary history, including the award-winning Emigrant Nation: The Making of Italy Abroad (Harvard University Press, 2008). In 35 years of service in the US Army, he served in Afghanistan, Sudan, Chad, Central African Republic, the Korean DMZ, and other places, including at the US Embassies in Rome, Italy; Bratislava, Slovakia; Khartoum, Sudan; Bangui, Central African Republic; and N'Djamena, Chad. His confessional formalist war poetry commemorates friends who died in service or as civilian victims, to bring attention to veteran suicides, the deliberate forgetting of Afghanistan and Sudan as taboo topics, and the gulfs and polarization dividing the world, which will just lead to more wars.
