Tony John Non-Member Joined 2026 Retired Army Major. Began writing fiction at 50.Fiction Poetry Tony John did not begin writing fiction until 2022, at the age of 50. His writing is grounded in the land, history, and people of the places he has lived. He spent a career as an Army officer, with combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, an overseas tour in South Korea, and African missions to Rwanda and Senegal before retiring as a Major and returning to Shenandoah County, Virginia, where he grew up. He currently works for the National Park Service and lives in Fort Valley, Virginia. His settings run from the plain to the peculiar — a bedroom, a river bend, a backcountry camp, a curio shop — and his register from quiet realism through horror to the absurd. What each story withholds varies; that it withholds does not. His stories “Portal” and “Season” are forthcoming in HeartWood Literary Magazine and The Ranger’s Almanac, respectively.
