William R. Johnson: Author of Crossings

Fiction Nonfiction

William R. Johnson was born into a U.S. military family whose frequent relocations carried him across oceans and continents. His childhood and adolescence unfolded in postwar Japan, occupied Germany, and in towns scattered across the United States, experiences that shaped his lifelong fascination with history, culture, and identity.

He earned a B.A. in Asian Studies from Washington State University and an M.A. in Far East Studies from the University of Arizona. For more than fifty years, Johnson has made Taiwan his home, building a life and career deeply rooted in the island’s shifting cultural and political landscape.

His short story collection Crossings draws from a lifetime of border crossings—geographical, cultural, and personal—capturing the resilience, dislocation, and discovery that mark a life lived between worlds.
