Florence Rees An agent with A. M. Heath Literary Agents (see other agents at this agency). About I love that feeling of having to read one more chapter. Characters (real or fictional) can stay with me for years. I’ve spent memorable hours weeping over the last pages in the beautiful, heart-wrenching memoirs of Paul Kalanthi’s When Breath Becomes Air and Cathy Rentzenbrink’s The Last Act of Love. It’s not just non-fiction though. Marian Keyes’s character, Rachel, from Rachel's Holiday gifted me with a compassion for addiction that only the most skilled of writers can conjure. And she made me laugh at the same time: I'll always love novels that tackle meaty topics with humour, like Catherine Newman's We All Want Impossible Things. I adore page turners such as An Anatomy of a Scandal and Such a Fun Age. Clever, gripping and with complicated and flawed characters we haven’t met before. Novels with relationships at the heart of the story consistently delight: recent favourites range from In Memoriam or Greta & Valdin to Just For The Summer and Yours Truly. This applies, too, to YA and NA fantasy, which I’ve long adored, inhaling series from Garth Nix, Robin Hobb and Mary Hoffman or Carissa Broadbent and Sarah J. Maas. The authors I represent include Philip Ellis, Salma El-Wardany, Jaspreet Kaur, Annie Lord, Rachel Thompson and Nussaibah Younis. Their books range from the heartbreaking and profound to the inspirational, funny and wise, with almost everything in between. I'm keen to find non-fiction and fiction writers who speak to a millennial and younger audience, be that a journalist who is looking to expand an idea, a screenwriter who is looking to try their hand at fiction or perhaps an activist with a social media platform. I'm actively looking for writers who are under-represented in the publishing world, through non-traditional channels, as well as my submissions, and I'm always interested in environmental and social issues. In the end, there's nothing I love more than escaping my day to day with a story I can’t put down. If you think your book fits with that, then please send it to me. I’d love to read it. Never pay an agent an up-front fee. That is not how literary agent representation works. Agents earn a commission only after they've landed a publishing deal for you. Also, agents scarcely ever contact writers. If an agent that you haven't queried contacts you about representation, be suspicious. Look up the agent and check if the email address is correct for that agent/agency.
