Harriet Moore

An agent with Aitken Alexander Associates (see other agents at this agency).

About

I joined Aitken Alexander Associates in 2024 after over a decade at David Higham Associates. I represent literary fiction, narrative non-fiction, and poetry.

My authors include three out of this decade’s 20 Granta Best of Young British novelists: the Booker Prize-shortlisted Sarah Bernstein; Booker Prize and Women’s Prize for Fiction-longlisted Sophie Mackintosh; and debut novelist Jennifer Atkins. I also represent the 2024 Windham-Campbell Prize recipient and Gordon Burn Prize-winner Kathryn Scanlan; the Forward Prize-winning poet, novelist and essayist Kei Miller; 2024 Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Harriet Baker; the Sunday Times bestseller Naoise Dolan; the B&N 2024 Discover Prize Finalist Lottie Hazell; the Nero Book Awards 2024 shortlisted Jo Hamya; the winner of the 2023 T S Eliot Prize and 2023 Forward Prize Jason Allen-Paisant; and the “effervescent” (The New Yorker) Marlowe Granados.

Statistics Synopsis

Harriet Moore's overall average response time is slower than most agents.

Collapse section Fiction Open

I am drawn to novels which have clarity, energy, and intention—the acclaimed debut novels by my authors Helen Marten, Eliza Barry Callahan, and Hannah Regel are good, invigorating examples of this. At the moment, I am particularly interested in the capaciousness of the third person and novels thinking ambitiously about structure and craft. Also, always, sentences which are tactile and idiosyncratic often with an unusual devotion to the paraphernalia of daily life—a surprising propensity for using household objects, clothes, food, the weather.

Collapse section Nonfiction Open

My non-fiction has a focus on literary biography, social, cultural and oral history, and vernacular or creative scholarship. Particularly writers who come at these genres with fresh and revisionist methodologies, books which vibrantly engage with archival work and private experience, and writers who blend the personal with the theoretical.

Collapse section Poetry Open

I represent a select list of poets which includes Rachael Allen, Sophie Collins, Eve Esfandiari-Denney, Oli Hazzard, Sandeep Parmar, and Jack Underwood. I look for surprising intonation and book-length narrative poems/projects rather than selected poems (and often the poets I represent are working on prose projects too—I am very fond of prose by poets).

Agent Impersonation Scams are becoming commonplace.
A legitimate agent will not contact you and request money to represent you. Never pay an agent an up-front fee. That is not how literary agent representation works. Agents earn a commission only after they've landed a publishing deal for you. Also, agents scarcely ever contact writers. If an agent that you haven't queried contacts you about representation, be suspicious. Look up the agent and check if the email address is correct for that agent/agency.
