About

Banks are some of the most secure places in the world—at least, that’s what we tend to think. But bank robbers have been challenging that notion, often to great effect.

Whether through violence, persuasion, or some mix of the two, bank robbers have managed to abscond with bank treasures ever since banks were created. No, they may not always make it very far afterwards, but the fact remains that they were able to steal from that great, big vault.

And while much of today’s banking is online, there is still something tantalizing about that giant vault full of valuables (just ask Hollywood). But what if that vault held more than just money? What if it held secrets? Mysteries? Or maybe… just maybe… horrors the world has never seen before?

That’s exactly what we want to see in Don’t Go for the Vault: A Bank Robbery Horror Anthology.

We’re looking for horror stories involving bank robberies. While the title for the anthology is “Don’t Go for the Vault,” we want characters who do exactly that. We want to see what you have hidden behind that giant metal door. Give us a reason to heed this legendary piece of bank robbery advice.

Stories can take place in any time period and do not need to occur exclusively within the confines of a bank. The three main requirements for stories are:

  • Story must involve a bank robbery;
  • Story must mention or include a bank vault door being opened; AND
  • Story must have horror elements (either inside or outside the vault).

While these requirements may seem simple, we encourage you to think outside the box.

Feel free to play around with the time period, the location, and even the definition of a bank (in its most basic form, it’s a place that holds things for later use, with the word “things” giving you a lot of creative freedom).

We also want you to play with perspective. Is your protagonist a robber? A bank teller or manager? The police? Or maybe just a simple bank patron there at the wrong time? Who are the heroes? And who (or what) are the real villains?

Think critically about what’s inside your vault. Is it valuable? Why is it locked away? Remember, banks can hold more than just money.

Lastly, think about where the horror may lie in your story. Is it inside or outside the vault? Who is scared and why?
