Dress Him Up: A Tailored Collection of Bespoke Fiction

A project of New Lit Salon Press (see other related projects).

Permanently Closed: This project is permanently closed to submissions (December 2022). We provide the following information as an archive.

About

Show us stories that: Explore clothes traditionally connected to the constructs of masculinity, like suits and uniforms, but dig deep into what society and those fashions say about what it means or does not mean to be a man. Challenge masculine norms across cultures. Defy traditional and societal norms of “masculine” dress. For example: Crossdressers, drag queens and kings Trans, queer, and non-binary people Gender norms and expectations in dress Color, pattern, and fabric: Pink and lavender are perceived as gendered colors and considered feminine. Plaids and camouflage are often considered masculine patterns, while florals are often considered feminine. Redefine what “clothes make the man” / “the man is his clothing” means. Stories should emphasize how the clothes help or hinder the protagonist in these stories. What challenges are faced or overcome? What expectations are met or failed? Stories should hone in on the defining fashion and/or accessories as the key object(ive)/element of the story. The story should not work without the fashion or accessory as its core feature.

Fees Notice: This project charges fees (or requires purchases) for all submissions. (Note: About 9% of anthologies always charge fees.)
