Hand to Mouth Anthology Southern Writers on Poverty A project of Loblolly Press (see other related projects). Permanently Closed: This project is permanently closed to submissions (September 2026). We provide the following information as an archive. About Poverty in the South is too often discussed at a distance. Flattened into stereotype, policy language, nostalgia, or shame, it is rarely given the complexity, dignity, and literary force it deserves.Hand to Mouth seeks new work by Southern writers whose lives have been shaped by poverty. We are interested in writing that reflects on poverty as lived experience, inherited condition, social structure, class passage, stigma, kinship, resourcefulness, hunger, desire, labor, and survival. Fees Notice: This project charges fees (or requires purchases) for all submissions. (Note: About 11% of anthologies always charge fees.) The fee is USD $5 (average for anthologies that charge).
