Rural Anthology Series

A project of Backwoods Literary Press

This listing may be deactivated on: 28 Sep 2026. Learn about this process.

About

This anthology [series] is grounded in rural places and communities. We seek work that feels lived rather than imagined, honoring the practices that create belonging and sustain everyday life. That might look like mountain songs, church dinners, cookouts, rural Pride festivals, union halls, tending the land, caregiving, storytelling, preserving family histories, or organizing neighbors.

We especially encourage submissions from working-class, LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, immigrant, disabled, and other historically underrepresented rural writers. Rural communities have never been one story, and neither will this anthology [series].

Limited Demographic: Submissions are restricted to people with meaningful connection to rural places or communities.
