The After Coetzee Project

Permanently Closed: This project is permanently closed to submissions. We provide the following information as an archive.

About

Until Disgrace, The Lives of Animals, and other works by J.M. Coetzee, nonhuman animals figured in contemporary fiction primarily as metaphor, allegory, and objects of blood sport. Their worlds — their lives — had been elided. Coetzee prepared the ground for nonhuman animals to reemerge in fiction. The After Coetzee Project, a print anthology, picks up from there. We seek short stories that are written out of the belief that nonhuman animals have their own interests, desires, and projects. Such stories would feature nonhuman animals as “real” beings we walk with and among: subjects in themselves, for themselves. Accordingly, stories about hunting or other forms of violence against animals would stay in the slush pile. Yet we’re not looking for sentimentality and bald polemics: we prefer subtext, nuance, and depth. All kinds of fictional approaches are welcome, from realism to genre fiction to deep innovation and experiment.
