About

Are you tired of the stifling expectations of conformity? Do you have a story to tell about breaking free from the mold of the "model American"? We're seeking submissions for an anthology of personal essays, 5-10-page plays/screen plays, flash fiction, and nonfiction centered on the theme of the dangers and liberation of the “White Picket Fence” syndrome or the model American.
What is the White Picket Fence syndrome? Well, The White Picket Fence is an American Icon throughout movies and is used to symbolize the perfect middle-class suburban life. This prevailing imagery has led to what some call the “White Picket Syndrome,” in which a person blindly holds on to the idea of a perfect lifestyle despite its inability to ever really exist.
In "The White Picket Fence: Stories of Individuality as Rebelliousness," we aim to explore how the ideals of sameness and consumerism are used to control and manipulate individuals. From enforced assimilation to the pressures of fitting into societal norms, we want to delve into the stories of rebellion, sadness and hurt that arise from challenging these expectations.
Whether you've experienced the suffocating effects of enforced assimilation or found liberation in thinking for yourself, we want to hear from you. Share your journey of breaking free from the constraints of the model American and forging a new path toward success on your terms.
