The Maxine Cassin Prize

About

For decades Maxine Cassin ran the New Orleans Poetry Journal and the New Orleans Poetry Press and was tireless in her dedication to helping young poets. Maxine was a force of nature. She was a sort of grand-dame for poetry in New Orleans and throughout the state. Maxine once told me about a dream she had in which she found herself atop the queen’s float during a Mardi Gras parade. She was throwing pages of poetry out to the crowd as the throngs cheered and went wild trying to catch each single sheet of verse. That is a dream everyone at the Poetry Society of Louisiana shares.
