About

Though primarily a literary agent, Faith Evans is also a translator and editor, and was a founding member of Women in Publishing. At Weidenfeld and Nicolson in the late 1960s she edited translations of Simone de Beauvoir and Françoise Sagan, and published A.S. Neill's Summerhill. In the 1970s, as an editorial director of André Deutsch, she commissioned Ruth First's biography of Olive Schreiner, Alix Kates Shulman's Burning Questions, the crime fiction of Roger L. Simon and many of the Sunday Times Insight books. In 1981 she went freelance, reviewing for the Observer and editing books for Cape, The Women's Press and Virago. Her editions include The Daughters of Karl Marx (letters) and Rebecca West's autobiography Family Memories. In the late 1980s she rediscovered and translated the work of Belgian novelist Madeleine Bourdouxhe (1906–1996), who was first promoted by Jean Paulhan and Simone de Beauvoir. Bourdouxhe's fiction is currently undergoing a second publishing revival with new editions of her work appearing in the UK, the US and Germany.

Before Submitting

We cannot guarantee that the information on this page is correct. We do our best to keep up, but it isn't always possible. Duotrope listings do not imply endorsement or recommendation of the agent or agency being listed. Before submitting, you should use your own judgment to determine whether the agent/agency meets your standards.

  • Always read the full guidelines provided by the agency/agent.
  • Unless the agency's guidelines state otherwise, always use industry standard manuscript formatting.
  • For agency submissions, it is standard to submit a query letter and sample instead of the full manuscript. Do this unless otherwise instructed.
  • Be professional, patient, and persistent.
