The Gentian Journal

About

The Gentian (pronounced jen-shun) is a journal that publishes exciting new poetry and photography from emerging and established poets. We believe, as Caroline Bird says, that “Failure isn’t the risk, but the point: each poem falls short so we write another.” We want work that throws itself out into the blue, that is ambitious, that does away with the every-day and old fashioned (or at least shows us it in a new light). We believe in poetry that is lyrical, strange and alive.

The journal is run and operated by Durham University Poetry Society. Each of our editors stays on as a reader to help the next and pass on their expertise. The Gentian is a project born out of a desire to share what we know, mentor new poets/editors and showcase new work. We believe our sense of community as well as our commitment to great poetry is what makes The Gentian special.

Before Submitting

We cannot guarantee that the information on this page is correct. It is not unusual for publications to evolve or close without notice. We do our best to keep up, but it isn't always possible. Duotrope listings do not imply endorsement or recommendation of the project being listed. Before submitting, you should use your own judgment to determine whether the project meets your standards.

  • Always read the full guidelines provided by the publisher.
  • Try to read at least one previous publication to get a better idea of what the editor would like to see.
  • Unless the publisher's guidelines state otherwise, always use industry standard manuscript formatting.
  • Be professional, patient, and persistent.
